hate who?!

Wow, what a funny world I live in…

Abbey came over for dinner last night and shared with me that she had read on Facebook that Osama had been killed, that his death was ordered by Obama, and that people were dancing on the White House lawn in celebration…! Holy shit…

My reactions…?

1. Well, who knows what’s true and what’s not true… I don’t think I’d rely on the media for my news of what’s happening in the world…

2. Holy shit! Are we for real?! We think violence and power and out-smarting makes the world a better place?! Haha, it’s just asking for more shit to come your way, dear ones…

3. And then… L’aura… Slow down… I notice I can immediately have compassion for Osama, meaning – no judgements at all that come up about him or any possible associations to him… And yet, I’m quick to think that the killers, or the ones organizing the killing, have got it all wrong, that their world-view is so f…ed up…

And… How do I include them, too, in my heart – create space for them to exist, and to be seen, and to be loved…? Am I expecting the killers to have compassion for the “bad” ones…? Then how about me having compassion for the killers?! Practice what I preach (instead of just creating a new bad person to hate)! Wow… Complex, yet powerful.

And for another take – Empathy and Crime on the BBC

“What is it that makes some people want to hurt or kill? In the wake of Osama Bin Laden’s death, we investigate the triggers, in the brain and in society, that make crime and cruelty flourish. We probe the troubling question of what drives some people to inflict horrific cruelty on their fellow human beings. What can we learn from the human brain?

One of Britain’s leading psychiatrists, Simon Baron-Cohen, suggests that if we want a scientific understanding, we should stop talking about evil and consider how our brains are wired for empathy, or lack of it. He also explains why some people are Zero Negative on his Empathy Quotient scale while others are Zero Positive.” (Source: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00gdt5y#p00grfzx)
